Department of Photonics

ABOUT US
MBE system Photonics combines basic physics with nanotechnology. This combination results in vast number of innovative research often leading to applications which have a great influence on our everyday life. Photonics seems to be technology of the 21 century, in a sense as microelectronics did in 20 century. In particular, laser light sources and detection devices are rapidly expanding area of applications.

Department of Physics and Technology of Low Dimensional Structures carries out research on the new light sources for industrial, environmental and medical applications. We focus on near- and mid-infrared devices; high power IR lasers, vertical external cavity surface emitting lasers (VECSELs) and quantum cascade lasers (QCLs) based on III-V compounds. Important area of our activity are III-Vs infrared detectors; p-i-n diodes, avalanche diodes and type II antimonide superlattice detectors.

The Department combines necessary resources for successful development of photonic devices and technologies. We employ highly qualified research staff and PhD students, and we have at our disposal state-of-the-art technological and characterisation equipment which allows for carrying out competitive research in the field of nanophotonics. The Department adds to the strength of basic research the expertise in commercialising optoelectronic devices. The technological facilities i.e., two Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE) reactors, complete III-V device processing facility and design support for modelling lasers of virtually all types, photodiodes and photonic integrated circuits allow us for fast and comprehensive design and fabrication of device structures according to customer specification. We can offer such structures in small quantities, and of non-standard design, which is not easily available with commercial wafer suppliers.

The mission of the Department of Physics and Technology of Low Dimensional Structures is to conduct basic and applied research aimed at developing of innovative micro- and nanotechnologies and their applications in the area of optoelectronics, photonics and microsystems. The Department is a core part of the Centre of Excellence - "Physics and Technology of Photonic Nanostructures" (CEPHONA) operating at the Institute of Electron Technology.
